Lower extremity amputation increases oscillatory flow in the infrarenal aorta: A new potential risk factor for abdominal aortic aneurysm development
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the US. The most common location of AAA is the infrarenal abdominal aorta where oscillatory flow is present over the cardiac cycle, figure 1. Oscillatory flow is known to initiate an inflammatory response in endothelial cells. Patients with lower extremity traumatic amputations have a 5-fold increase in AAA occurrence unrelated to co-morbidities. The objective of the study is to determine the amount of infrarenal aortic oscillatory flow changes between baseline and acute occlusion of arterial blood supply to a lower extremity (a condition mimicking a lower extremity amputation).

Renal insufficiency after infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm reconstruction: An analysis of this risk factor in 45 patients
Abstract Background: Renal insufficiency is a potential complication after infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and is a significant risk factor for postoperative mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of this risk factor, before and during operation. Methods: In this prospective study, between 2003 and 2006, 45 patients underwent repair of an infrarena...
متن کاملAcquired Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Coarctation: Treatment with Percutaneous Self Expandable Stent
Abdominal aortic coarctation is an extremely rare vascular pathology. Its etiology can be congenital or acquired. Here we present a case of acquired infrarenal abdominal coarctation in a 66-year-old woman who complained of low back and legs pain. She had no signs of resting lower limb ischemia, with diminished distal pulses and normal blood pressure in upper and lower extremities. Magnetic reso...
متن کاملComparison of oscillatory wall shear stress in the abdominal aorta of men and women: relationship to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development
Background Numerous animal and human studies have confirmed a relationship between inflammation, wall shear stress (WSS, the frictional force of fluid felt at a vessel wall) and vascular pathologies. These studies suggest the importance of WSS as a predictive factor in evaluating an individual’s risk of developing vascular disease. There have been several observational studies which indicate th...
متن کاملAortic Dissection and Thrombosis Diagnosed by Emergency Ultrasound in a Patient with Leg Pain and Paralysis
The authors present a case of aortic dissection and abdominal aortic aneurysm thrombosis in a 78-year-old male who presented to the emergency department (ED) complaining of lower extremity and paralysis for the past 1.5 hours. The initial vital signs in the ED were as follows: blood pressure (BP) 132/88 mmHg, heart rate (HR) 96, respiratory rate (RR) 14, and an oxygen saturation of 94% at room ...
متن کاملDrug Therapy for Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Dear Editor,Abdominal aortic aneurysm is often asymptomatic, less recognized, and causes considerable mortality and morbidity, if missed. The incidence varies from country to country and the occurrence is influenced by modifiable (smoking, coronary heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and prolonged steroid therapy) and non-modifiable risk factors (increasing age, male gender, and positive...
